Leon Draisaitl grew up in Cologne, Germany, the son of professional hockey player and coach Peter Draisaitl. When his father took over as head coach of the Ravensburg Towerstars in 2008, a young Leon became a regular fixture at the rink.
One player stood out: Ben Thomson, a Canadian from Coaldale, Alberta, wearing #29. Thomson let the coach's son skate with the team after practice, took him under his wing, and treated him like he belonged long before anyone outside Germany knew Leon Draisaitl's name.
Leon never forgot it. He wore #29 in junior hockey with the Prince Albert Raiders in the WHL. He wore it when Edmonton drafted him third overall in 2014. He still wears it today as one of the best players in the NHL.
